Die Ausstellung WHERE WHEN WHAT WHY zeigt vier Künstler — Doris Frohnapfel und Vesko Gösel (D), Kevin B. Lee ( USA) und Siska (Libanon) – vier unterschiedliche Positionen auf der Suche nach Bildern und deren Authentizität, Wahrheit und Bedeutung — in ihren Recherchen durchforschen sie Archive und reisen durch verschiedene Länder, Kulturen, Zeiten, Systemen und Ebenen — durch reale, erfundene und virtuelle Welten — sie beschäftigen sich mit Geschichte, Archäologie, mit Fotografie-, Architektur-, Film- und Kulturgeschichte — suchen dort nach Verbindungen und Bezügen — verknüpfen Dokumentation und Fiktion miteinander — graben nach Fundstücken, die sie in Besitz nehmen, umfunktionieren, einen neuen Wert geben und in einen neuen Kontext stellen — schaffen Objekte und Bilder, die Geschichte dokumentieren und Geschichten erzählen, die nach Erklärungen suchen und diese hinterfragen.

»where when what why«


The artistic works of Doris Frohnapfel and Siska are resulting from their residency within the program Art and Archives. Cologne-Beirut in 2014 (Kunst und Dokument. Köln-Beirut). Art and Archives. Cologne-Beirut offers art practitioners, authors and curators a residency that includes a specific approach - the use of archival assets - to the program and exhibitions that follow. The program encourages artists to explore different models with which one can represent artistically the complex and sometimes repressed experiences of urban societies. The cities associated with the project - Cologne, Germany and Beirut, Lebanon - reflect their conviction that sharing cross-cultural experiences in this field will open new horizons to all involved, an interchange that is conspicuously absent in intra-culture debates. Art and Archives. Cologne-Beirut was designed and is being curated by Stanislaw (Stan) Strasburger since 2012. The program has been produced since then every year. Its 2nd edition is being financial supported by the Municipality of Cologne, Municipality of Beirut, The City of Cologne’s Documentation Center on National Socialism, UMAM Documentation and Research, RheinEnergie Stiftung Kultur and BBK Köln e.V. and is being implemented under the patronage of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Beirut.
